RE: Newmont Corporation's collection and disclosure of key environmental
information for mining operations outside the United States
Dear Mr. Murdy
and Mr. Francisco:
We recently
noted that Newmont has posted all of its Toxic Release Inventory
data concerning its U.S. mining operations on the company's website.
Providing this information to the public, via both the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and your own website, helps to improve community
access to critical and needed information related to environmental
and public health protection.
As you know,
many concerns have been raised concerning the release of toxics
from Newmont's mining operations outside the United States, such
as in Indonesia and Peru. We believe that the local communities
in which Newmont conducts mining operations abroad would benefit
from the collection and public disclosure of information in the
same manner that local communities in the U.S. benefit from Newmont's
collection and dislosure of its toxic releases within the U.S.
Given the importance
of such collection and disclosure, we would like to respectfully
request that you reply to the following queries:
· For its facilities and operations outside the United States,
does Newmont collect the same toxic release data required under
the U.S. Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act and
any regulations pursuant to the Act?
· For
its facilities and operations outside the United States, does Newmont
make public, including to the government, the same toxic release
data required under the U.S. Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know
Act and any regulations pursuant to the Act? Is the same information
provided in local languages in formats accessible to local communities?
We thank you
in advance for your prompt and complete reply to this request. Please
feel free to contact David Waskow on our staff with any questions
at (202) 783-7400 x108.
Sincerely,
Leslie G. Fields
