Voting Record on GE Fish Amendment
See How YOUR Representative Voted

On July 11, 2001, Congress took their first vote in over a decade on genetic engineering. The vote was on an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations bill that called for a one-year moratorium on the approval of genetically engineered fish. Representatives Kucinich (D-OH) and DeFazio (D-OR) added the amendment to prevent the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) commercial approval of GE fish to ensure that the potential human health risks and ecological impacts of genetically engineered fish are fully analyzed by the appropriate agencies before any federal commercial use approval occurs.

While the amendment lost 145-279, we should note that 145 votes in our favor (including 13 Republicans and 2 Independents) is substantially more than the 58 representatives who last year cosponsored GE food labeling legislation. One vote in favor of the amendment that stood out was that of Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) who scored a 6% record on the 1999 League of Environmental Voters scorecard.

Another was the vote of Representative Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD), chair of the Fisheries Conservation, Wildlife and Oceans and has pledged to hold hearings on the potential impacts of engineered fish. Both are concerned about the impact such fish could have on fishing economies in their districts.

State by State vote results on the Kucinich/DeFazio amendment -- July , 2001
