Biofuels Campaign

Welcome to Friends of the Earth's Biofuels Campaign!

Friends of the Earth welcomes the development of a biofuel that is sustainable and energy efficient, but large scale agro-fuels currently in use have proven to be ecologically damaging, especially those produced from corn, sugar, soy and palm oil.  Read Friends of the Earth Position on Biofuels Here.

The drive to substitute fossil fuels with biofuels is motivated in large part by an assumption that bio-based energy is good for the environment. However, biofuels can create significant environmental harm. Large-scale agricultural production of corn and other crops used for biofuels often involves massive fertilizer inputs, use of large quantities of water, and soil erosion. Also, rather than helping prevent global warming, biofuels can actually speed up global warming by destroying forests and other natural ecosystems.  Biofuels also compete for land with food production, resulting in rising food prices globally.

For this reason, Friends of the Earth is working to end incentives for unsustainable biofuels.  Our campaigns focus on the economic drivers of unsustainable biofuel production and consumption.  Click on the buttons below to learn more about Friends of the Earth's Biofuels Campaign!
