Launching our Earth Budget campaign: Prioritizing people, not polluters

The Earth Budget Campaign, launching this summer, will work to end subsidies for polluting industries, ensure adequate funding for the federal government to enforce environmental safeguards, make polluters pay for the damage they inflict on people and the environment, and incentivize the development of clean energy technologies. Subsidies for dirty fuels like ethanol are prime targets for elimination.

We can make polluters pay for the costs created by their pollution. A crucial, ultimately necessary step is to raise revenue by putting a price on carbon. Putting a tax on carbon dioxide emissions and other climate-destabilizing pollution would raise trillions of dollars. This revenue could be used for a variety of purposes, including deficit reduction and shoring up essential government programs and services.

Our country isn’t broke, and budget deficits can be solved without harming the public and environment. Our Earth Budget Campaign is leading the fight in Washington to end subsidies for polluting industries like Big Oil and to embrace innovative budget solutions like a carbon tax. This will protect the environment, cut the deficit, and equip our government to advance the public good.

Corporate polluters have had their way in Washington for too long. It’s time to start prioritizing people and the planet for a change.
